Corus Hotels
Corus Hotels - hotels with character - hotels unchained
Celebrate! Escape! Relax! Here's what Corus Hotels say about themselves: "With over 60 hotels in the UK, ranging from Scotland to the West Country, Corus hotels are one of Britain's largest hotel groups. Whether it's a weekend break or romantic getaway you're looking for, there's bound to be a Corus hotel somewhere nearby to fit the bill. Hotels range from historic coaching inns and manor houses to modern city centre hotels. Corus properties are full of character, retaining their own unique local point of view without the predictable, formula approach of most hotel groups. Corus hotels focus on traditional hospitality, friendliness and value and are full of character and variety."

is a mid-market hotel group, with over 65 properties in the UK,
with a further 2 in Australia and 2 in Malaysia.
The brand
aims to be bright and stylish with an enthusiastic approach to
service and a commitment to get the simple things right, every-time.

The group employs
approximately 3,400 full and part-time staff.
The company's mission is to be the number one mid-market hotel group, with delighted customers, envious competitors and employees who are proud to make it happen.
Company History
1993 - company launched as Regal Hotel Group PLC.
April 1995 - Regal Hotel Group PLC obtained a listing on the London Stock Exchange and added 10 more hotels to its portfolio.
May 1996 - the group
quadrupled in size with the purchase of the White Hart chain from
Granada.
This transformed Regal into one of the UK's major hotel operators
and leader in the three star provincial market.
April 1997 - geographical coverage was strengthened by the acquisition of 13 Country Club Hotels from Whitbread.
October 1997 - the group
announced a £40 million cash investment from the Regent
Corporation, a hotel and property associate of Malayan United
Industries. The MUI Group is a diversified conglomerate,
headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and listed on the Kuala
Lumpur Stock Exchange. It has major and substantial interests in
retailing, hotels, food and confectionery, property, construction,
financial services, travel and tourism, educational services and
information technology. MUI is also the major shareholder in Laura
Ashley Holdings PLC.
This deal was instrumental in accelerating the Corus brand
development programme and refurbishment of the estate.
December 1997 - the group completed the purchase of its first central London hotel, the 401-bedroom Plaza on Hyde Park, in a joint venture with Regent Corporation.
March 1998 - the 3 star Richmond Hill Hotel, the 4 star Richmond Gate Hotel and Cedars Health and Leisure Club in Surrey were added to the portfolio, through a joint venture with Elmville Limited.
May 1998 - MUI Group acquired a controlling interest in The Restaurant Partnership, which owns and manages brands such as Simply Nico and Nico Central. It also owns a number of well-known London restaurants such as Elena's L'Etoile, The Gay Hussar and Thierry's.
July 1998 - announced the strategic disposal of 12 non-core properties.
November 1998 - following
extensive market research, the group announced the launch of its
new hotel brand, Corus, to focus on the needs of the corporate
market. The company adopted the trading name Corus and Regal
hotels, with the Corus and Regal brands continuing to operate
side by side.
January 1999 - the group took a significant step forward in consolidating its position as a leading UK mid-market hotel operator, with the acquisition of County Hotels PLC. This deal brought 25 new properties and some important new locations to the nationwide portfolio.
May 1999 - following a strategic review by the Board, the company announced the planned disposal of 35 non-core properties, which had been identified as unsuitable for re-branding as Corus hotels. These were predominantly seaside and leisure properties and therefore not right for the corporate market.
December 1999 - by the end of 1999, there were 29 Corus branded hotels in the UK.
October
2000 - London Vista Hotel Ltd, an associate company of the Group's
major shareholder, Malayan United Industries, concluded a
successful take-over bid for Regal Hotel Group PLC, which was
subsequently de-listed from the London Stock Exchange, and became
a subsidiary of MUI.
October 2001 - Corus and
Regal launched the first Corus hotels outside of the UK. Two
Malaysian and three Australian properties joined the fresh,
stylish brand; namely the Corus hotel Kuala Lumpur, the Corus
Paradise resort Port Dickson, the Corus hotel Sydney, the Corus
Grosvenor hotel Adelaide and the Corus hotel Hobart. With the
integration of the Asia-Pacific properties, the Corus and Regal
hotel chain added another 1,230 rooms to its inventory.
July 2002 - following a multi-million pound refurbishment, the group's central Glasgow property was re-opened as the Corus hotel Glasgow.
February 2003 - Corus and Regal announced it would trade as Corus hotels to improve brand clarity and awareness. It also announced the disposal of 25 non-core hotels unsuitable for the business market. In all, nine hotels were sold during 2003.
November
2003 - In order to increase brand awareness, three hotels were
renamed. The Plaza on Hyde Park became the Corus hotel Hyde Park,
the Honiley Court Hotel & Conference Centre became the Corus
hotel Warwick and the Madison Inn became the Corus hotel Swindon.
A £4 million refurbishment programme for the Corus hotel Hyde
Park was also initiated.
February
2004 - The brand development programme continued with the
announcement that three more hotels would be renamed - the Time
Out Hotel became the Corus hotel Leicester, the Queensferry Lodge
Hotel became the Corus hotel Edinburgh North and the Barns Hotel
became the Corus hotel Bedford".
