Let's be honest about it - I personally don't hold Microsoft software in high regard, and I believe there are now much better operating systems available. But recently (2001/06) I saw some hate sites in which Bill Gates was being maligned in various ways. I don't think that's fair, and I think something needs to be pointed out:

If a person is going to be criticised, they should be criticised for what they have actually done, and should be accused of things they are actually guilty of.

For example:

Bill Gates has got a lot of money. Great! What's wrong with that?! It doesn't matter if he's got a lot of money. If you're silly enough to buy the software, that's your problem. Anyway, it could happen to YOU. You might think up a clever plan and end up making a lot of money, and then you might find jealous people accusing you of all sorts of daft things which you're not guilty of!

If you're going to accuse Microsoft of having a MONOPOLY, well, you might have had a point in 1998, but we're not living in that century anymore! I know you can still find a few companies who are fooled into thinking Microsoft Windows is the only choice for their offices, but then again they probably still compulsorily wear SUITS and TIES and have other oldfashioned ideas about business. But Microsoft no longer has a monopoly. You can buy a computer and at most up-to-date computer vendors you have a choice of operating systems: Linux, Microsoft,  BeOs , etc! You, the customer, makes your choice. (If the shop won't give you a choice, don't buy from there!). Note about Beos by a helpful contributor: Here’s what happened: Microsoft sued BeOS and put them out of business in 2001.

Now let's get this right: BILL GATES is not The Devil, 666, or any other religious superstitious notion. He is merely a businessman who has done rather well. If you're into all this "number of the beast" business, I can tell you precisely who 666 is and why the name calculates to exactly that number etc. (see 666). But even a glance at Bill Gates can tell you he's not any of that. In fact he's quite a casual-looking character who you'd imagine would be quite friendly to talk to.

On this MONOPOLY business, did you know that 70% of all servers on the Internet are Unix or Linux? Ie, most of the Internet is Unix/Linux and not Microsoft?! It's only really the first-time buyer cheap home computer market for toy computers which Microsoft has anything even approximating to a MONOPOLY on.

Now, Well done to Bill Gates! (This item is not about computer software, but about GOLF! It's also about your freedom to wear what you want!)

Also, it's often assumed that WIMP Interface = Microsoft Windows. Ie, that all this silly point-and-click stuff is Microsoft and that they are one and the same thing. Not so. There are other WIMP interfaces. I don't like WIMP interfaces and all this messing about pointing a mouse about and having silly boxes overlapping each other, and I consider it a debasement of the idea of what a computer IS. I much prefer the COMMAND LINE system where I'm actually in control of the machine. PROGRAMMING is the thing, and we really can do without all this nannying stuff going on and getting in the way. But you can't blame Microsoft for the fad of Windowishness - there are others in this business, and some of them are better or worse.

Also, there is a myth that Bill Gates is getting richer all the time. Not true. Some days he gets richer and some days he gets poorer. How'd you like to be a victim of fluctuating share prices like that? And on average, he gets poorer, because of the changing face of computer marketplace. But in the long run, it is my belief that Microsoft will suddenly slump and may even go broke! It's quite simple - Linux is improving and getting more powerful and more popular all the time. Sooner or later business confidence will suddenly switch. It will go very suddenly when it happens. If Microsoft does go bankrupt, I hope Bill Gates ends up keeping at least some of the money. At least a few tens of millions of it.

As you can see from my write-up, I'm not pro-Microsoft, but I do think that FAIRNESS is important. Criticise Microsoft, but tell the truth. Whether Microsoft succeeds or fails, it's not ultimately important. What I want is A GOOD OPERATING SYSTEM so I can write computer programs!

Special note on some security messages apparently FROM MICROSOFT: Beware, as such messages are sometimes hoaxes (again Microsoft NOT GUILTY), and if you run an attachment you may end up catching a virus. More about this here

When sending files to other people by e-mail, don't assume the other person has got Microsoft on their computer! Also, don't send bloatware files such as .doc for various reasons. See The Folly of .DOC

UPDATE: Now, 2002, Microsoft has done something which in my opinion is SO BAD that it has seriously questioned my previous view of "not the Devil" etc! I had thought that compelling shops to sell XP was bad enough, but now there is this Palladium plan to make Microsoft compulsory in YOUR computer, eliminate all the competition, and to spy on everyone. This is a serious threat to personal liberty, and has already been made LAW by the US Government. Don't let them get away with it! More about this: PALLADIUM

UPDATE: 2006/12: What about Microsoft Vista? I'd suggest being cautious. Similar applies to Windows7, which is almost the same thing!

Phone calls from Microsoft to tell you about "malicious software"? There are people phoning from call centres abroad, and they might phone you and tell you that they are Microsoft and that you have downloaded "malicious software". Beware: They are impostors! They are not Microsoft. Microsoft does not phone people and tell them they have viruses. Don't be fooled by this. It's a scam! However, it is nevertheless true that computers with Microsoft operating systems tend to get infested with viruses and spyware. You can beat this by taking your own antivirus measures, and by looking towards upgrading to Linux

Anyway, Why do shops still sell Microsoft?. Some sort of cosy agreement or cartel? A conspiracy, perhaps?

What to do if you don't agree to Microsoft Media Player 11 agreement terms and conditions

Also see The Microsoft Store where you can buy Microsoft stuff if you like. I'm not so keen on the software, but I must admit they sell some quite good mice!

Although Microsoft operating systems tend to have two letters to distinguish them, for example Microsoft CE, Windows ME, Windows NT, it still is not cement, and besides, it's fundamentally SOFT. The question is, are you soft enough to part with your hard earned money for it, or would you rather have a free operating system that's built on a more concrete basis, such as Linux?!

There is a mystery which is still outstanding: How Does Microsoft Stay In Business despite Linux?!
