Imagine a world where electronic connection was widespread. It's easy to see how communication between anywhere and anywhere else could be done easily. Once the initial cost of putting the wires in (or these days (2000) fibre-optics), the cost of making communication would be approximately zero. It's just a matter of organisation. Supposing then someone had a bright idea of "p-mail" (physical mail) or "the Post", and they tried to explain it. It would be truly an incredible notion! The idea is that instead of sending digital bits down a line or using a phone to send an analogue signal to somewhere where the hard work of putting the lines in has already been done, you send a message by writing it and then putting the "letter" let's call it into a "postbox". The idea is then, amazing as it may sound, that someone comes along and physically empties the box and takes all the letters off to be manually sorted out. The items are then physically transported from one place to another, across land, or by sea, or by air, over miles of terrain, and then at the destination there is someone called "the postman" who goes to the actual address in the physical world where the site is and puts the letter through a hole in the door (the "letterbox") or into a box on the front of the place (the "mailbox"). The postman does this very early in the morning when most people are still asleep.

Well, surely, the answer from sceptics would be that this is quite plainly expecting MIRACLES and that no company or organisation would try and achieve this. And how much is it going to cost? The price of a stamp? Having messages physically transported from place to place and delivered by someone early in the morning like that? TWENTY PENCE (2000/09) (US 12cents?) for anywhere in the UK to anywhere else in the UK? Or 37p to anywhere in the world? BUT, that's the fact!

But, the inventor of the idea replies, the thing about p-mail is that unlike some types of slow electronic systems, (is that why they call it snail mail?), the Post has a much higher potential data-rate. If you wrap up a collection of CDs of data in a parcel and post it, then many gigabytes can be sent within a matter of a few days, which is faster than current electronic systems (e-mail).
