Advice about having Cosmetic
Surgery
Do you know that advert for
hair products with the motto "BECAUSE I'M WORTH IT"?,
that is the thing to remember about having plastic surgery. YOU
are worth it, and what you're paying for is an upgrade of
yourself. The converse is NOT true however, ie if you don't have
surgery it doesn't make you less important, as there are a lot of
people who are quite happy about how they are inside the mind
without having surgery. Therefore it is a matter of personal
taste, each to their own, and be true to yourself.
- FINDING OUT about cosmetic surgery isn't expensive. You can get
loads of information from a lot of places FREE, and it is
possible to go and talk with consultant surgeons on a no-obligation
free consultation at many places. That way you can find
out if it's for you, and what the details of the
procedures are. If you're wondering if a particular
improvement is possible, ask a lot of different sources.
Generally whatever it is IS possible, even though some
places say it isn't.
- SHOP AROUND. Prices vary
wildly, and the quality of the work is different at
different places. It is not true that you always get a
better service by paying more money. Neither is it best
to go for the cheapest necessarily. It's a matter of
seeing a lot of choices, and then making your own mind up
about it.
- Make sure you mention any
health problems you have before going to a consultation.
I have been severely inconvenienced by plastic surgery
clinics being prejudiced against me for being diabetic,
and on one occasion been turned down by a surgeon because
of a previous operation. Bizarrely, some anaesthetists
are also unable to cope with some conditions.
- When selecting places at
which to have an operation, consider both private clinics
and departments within large hospitals. Prices may differ,
and what's important ultimately is the SURGEON. A surgeon
will perform operations at many different hospitals and
clinics. There are many good surgeons, and it's sometimes
best to find the right surgeon instead of finding the
clinic or hospital first.
- If someone ever says
"You can't do that", disregard. Generally, if
you visit enough places and do enough research and travel
far enough, seemingly impossible things are possible.
- The idea that cosmetic
surgery is "only for movie stars" or is "only
for the rich and famous" is false. What's more
likely is that the movie stars / rich and famous people
FIRST has surgery and then the improvement in their self-confidence
allowed them to rise to stardom! Expensive? Yes. But it
is possible to do a calculation to work out how long it
would take to SAVE UP.
- Assess the realistic level
of risk. With any surgery there is risk, but it is
usually a small risk. However, rumours of bad news spread
when something goes wrong. This makes it look riskier
than it actually is. It is like FLYING, statistically
less risky than standing on the ground worrying about
flying.
- Remember that in the end
it is your own choice, and as surely as you should not be
pressurised into having an operation, you shouldn't be
pressurised into NOT having it. "A dog is not just
for christmas, it's for life". The results of an
operation (or the choice of not having it) are for life,
and with luck you'll live a long time.
