Special points of note by an affiliate:
A minor quirk of the TradeDoubler system is that if you apply for an affiliate program you will be optimistically told "You can now put links on your site and start earning money!". However, to be fair about it, it is much better to wait until you are approved, otherwise you could have put the work in for nothing!
Other notes: TradeDoubler has a set of high-prestige merchants which are well worthwhile. It really is true, you can partner with some of the biggest places in the world. However if you're an interesting individualistic character like me you may find yourself prejudiced against by some merchants (who really should know better!) The thing to remember about this is that judging has a flipside, and that any companies who judge you badly are intrinsically showing themselves up to be prejudiced. Plus of course they're doing themselves out of business! I must point out here that this isn't the fault of TradeDoubler, who have merely allowed merchants to judge affiliates. And, even despite the problems of "denials", most companies, especially the really good ones, are aware that we are living in the 21st Century and that diversity is actually good for business.
Also, if you find you are denied by a merchant, don't despair! Phone up the people who actually made the decision and point out in the most polite and diplomatic manner the error they have made. Most will see sense!
Incidentally, it really is true that you
make money while you sleep. Sometimes I wake up in the afternoon
(having worked until tooit-toowooish times of the morning on my
site) and I know that during the night, around the world, people
will have been buying loads of stuff via affiliate links on my
site!

2003/12/29 some links had been found to have "expired" and left us in the lurch. Update 2006: Improvements at TradeDoubler: TradeDoubler has been found (at least in my opinion) to have improved greatly in the acceptance of affiliates on merchants' affiliate programs (why do merchants ever deny affiliates?). Also, the LINK MATRIX has made a big difference to the ease of use of the TradeDoubler system, as real text links are available for almost all merchants and this saves a lot of work in the construction of link pages for each dedicated page!
